LCCs, originally developed in the USA, have brought about enormous impact on global aviation markets. In Japan, where LCCs were introduced last year, the share of LCCs’ in the domestic market is expected to expand. It is forecasted that the introduction of LCCs is expected to trigger the revitalization of domestic airports, regardless of probable stagnation and decline of aviation demand due to the decreasing birthrate, aging population and population decline in Japan.

However, future developments and the concrete impact of LCC, and furthermore, the future perspectives of aviation services/businesses/ airports, still remain unclear.

Based on these backgrounds, JITI held in conjunction with the Aviation Policy Research Association, an international aviation seminar. The seminar’s aim was to focus on the US domestic aviation market’s more than 30years’ history of LCCs, and to analyze LCC developments and their impact on airports, in order to draw insights for Japan.

In this seminar, JITI’s research fellow reported on the latest trends in the US aviation industry and presented his analysis on LCCs’ development and impact. In the panel discussion session, panelists actively exchanged views that contribute to promoting the deeper understanding of LCCs in Japan. The participants offered their suggestions on initiatives by airports and local regions, based on the multi-facetted aspects of LCCs.
