The side event of UNFCCC COP18 “Transport and Climate Change Expert Day” was held on November 29th in Doha, aimed to allow parties and other interested experts to discuss transport-related climate change issues. ITPS co-hosted the event.

ITPS made a presentation named “The contribution of High Speed Rail to Climate Change” that introduced the results of our 3-year international joint study “Study of Transport System in a Low Carbon Society (STL)” completed in 2010; to significantly curve the amount of CO2 emissions from the transport sector in 2050, a large-scale modal shift and drastic behavioral change, in conjunction with long-term action plans are essential. The introduction of high speed rail was highlighted as a measure effective as the intercity-traffic volume is expected to grow sharply.

Further, ITPS spoke about potential contributions of high speed rail network in emerging countries in light of the results of our current study on a vision for a HSR network in India.
